Kosher Cheeseburger

I'm sure many of you have heard about the uproar surrounding the new kosher cheeseburger. The beef is real beef, while the cheese is tofu (parve). This new "cheeseburger" is being served at Talia's Steakhouse.

I have seriously come to believe that frum people need a lesson in logic. Not only do these wacko frum people create uproars when they are unnecessary (sheital store, concert) but the arguments used to justify them are simply twisted, illogical, and inconsistent, especially in terms of "Talia's Steakhouse"

The first argument is just beautifully (note sarcasm) written up by one of the YWN commentors on their post about this issue. The commentor said the following:

"do we have to be like goyim in e/t we do!!! we copy the way they dress do we also have to eat what they eat? "

I would also like to question (partially because of A Simple Jew) why nobody complains about pizza, sushi, chinese food, or just about any other food, but they choose to attack the cheeseburger? Why not KD? I happen to describe that place as the "Kosher McDonalds + more" to my non-Jewish or non-religious friends!

On the blog "A Simple Jew" I found the perfect reply to this, and he wrote:

"Throughout history Jews who kept kosher have eaten what was available in the countries that they lived. The key is simply that it must be kosher – and if it is, then it is. End of story"

The second argument against this cheeseburger is that of "Maaras Ayin", that it may appear as if we are doing something wrong. I guess I would see that point, if it were CONSISTENT. Seriously, how many people spread margerine on their baked potato or corn while eating flieshigs? Or how about parve ice cream being served at flieshig restuarants?

The NY Post article quoted an anti-cheeseburger frummy: "Any Jew who keeps kosher knows a cheeseburger is not permissible. But . . . what happens if a young kid, a 10-year-old, goes in there and says, hmm, maybe cheese on a burger is OK?"

I would like to ask him why it is, that for years we've been smearing our baked potatoes with margerine, and eating parve ice cream in restuarants, and no one said anything, but NOW suddenly, they all seem to care! Shouldn't you teach you then already fear your 10-year-old will think ice cream is alright after a burger? or after chulent on shabbos?

I have a solution to the whole problem. We should all become vegetarians. Then all we will have to worry about is the bugs in the vegetables. Or better yet we should all not eat at all; we may all become very skinny. Perhaps a better solution is for all of us to eat raw meat, freshly slaughtered.

lol. I like it. Lets all rile-up the Rebbeim, so that they ban food, and then only the self-thinking "normal" Jews will be left :)

woohoo :)

Ugh... I'm from Cleveland, we have the first kosher Subway in America. There is parve cheese to put on the sandwiches and there was not one bit of protest. A few months later Flatbush decided to get on the bandwagon and made their own kosher Subway, they couldn't get anyone to give them a hechsher while using parve cheese, so they don't (which, in my opinion, is not Subway... its just a deli store). This is just another reason why Jews need to get out of New York...

Oh, and your points about sushi, parve ice cream, etc are right on.

Jessica: I think i need to get out of the city. lol. I also heard that about Subway. NYers are trying to make it to the major leagues, and compete with Bnei Brak ... haha
I need to get out of here!!! But I'm so lazy, and no frum relatives anywhere. lol. So I guess I'm stuck here until someone REALLLLY irks me.

Excellent point. Goyim are known to eat 3 meals a day. Clearly, we shouldn't do that. They also wear pants, unlike our ancestors, who wore robes. Not only that, but they get haircuts, brush their teeth, pee, and have children. All of these things must be assur.

hey you're right! and our shuls shouldn't have memberships, presidents, boards...we shouldn't have Chinese restaurants to begin with, or steakhouses...

David: You're so right. i wonder if Rebbeim realize that goyim ALSO pee. lol.

btw. This is a cute "article" by theknish.com that talks about how Rebbeim forbade the name "Suri" after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes named their daughter that. :)

college girl: lol, yea. our entire shul membership/president system comes from goyish ideas. tsk tsk.

when i grew up we always had kosher cheese burgers! Only instead of real burgers with tofu cheese, we would have veggie burgers with real cheese :)

I am so glad I don't live in NY. The frum community is obsessed with minutae that have nothing to do with actual halacha.

Let's not forget kosher crab and rubashkin pepperoni (tastes exactly like the real thing), beef bacon, bacon bits, etc. The following things should also be banned because of Maaras Ayin: lasagna, parve cheese, parve burgers, parve ice cream, all not "traditional" restaurants, all fish other than gefirte fish, pizza, all bread other than challa, marshmallows, any and all kosher verisions of not kosher food.

I worked with a couple of Satmar. Riding a bike for adults is assur because goyim do it. And here I thought that there are more goyim driving cars than riding bikes, I guess I was wrong.

We're all going to hell anyway for being on internet. If you read blogs and surf the net it's like you're going to see a hooker. If you write blogs and create sites, you help the spread of evil and you're the hooker.

BOO!

btw, I recently noticed that Glatt Mart is selling boxes of regular and chocolate fortune cookies. Bought some for shabbat.
