Homeschooling

I read the article Homeschooling: An Authentic Torah Approach in this weeks Jewish Press, and I have got to say that I was absolutely surprised by how many frum people actually homeschool. I'm not sure if they gave numbers, but they did interview a few people, and they implied the number was not as low as I thought.

I do have to say that what didn't surprise me was the fact that they kept mentioning marraige on the topic of homeschool. I just find it fascinating that ALL of Jewish life revolves around who you marry. Oh well, those who homeschooled had no problem not being part of the game.

I would like to homeschool one day, and so I find topics such as these (and education generally) fascinating.

I never could have been home-schooled. My lack of social skills would have guaranteed that I never make any friends if I wasn't surrounded by other students.

yea. its not for everyone.

Though I would've liked it. :). My mom would've hated it though. lol

jessica is right- i know a few kids that were homeschooled and they lacked social skills

I think it all depends on the person. If the parents encourage socialization and the kid has the type of personality, than sending them to shul every shabbos, and sending them to "extra curricular" classes like dance, music, drama, karate and such, would be enough of a socialization. Plus the kids would actually learn from their parents, like originally intended.

good point. that makes sense

Nope havent heard of it.

with the cost of day school tuition rising higher than the price of college, who wouldnt think about homeschooling

There are no numbers listed in the article re: number of people homeschooled. My guess is that the number is quite small indeed, and the paper is trying to imply that there are more with all of those anecdotes. Also, I was unaware that King Solomon wrote the Torah. I thought he wrote some important books in K'tuvim.

Considering how "well" a lot of parents are educated. The kids are gonna be even more dee dee dee.

Moshe - not necessarily. If you look at statistics which encompass all homeschool children, not just frum one, they do get the highest scores on entrance exams to colleges and win all kinds of scholarships.

Keep in mind that homeschool kids are required by law to take state exams to prove that they are upto speed with their peers in PS.

The only negative point anyone ever has is the one about socialization. That one is usually covered by Church and sports activities

moshe- in the frum world I'd quicker question the education of the school teacher than the parent.

Ookamikun said...

And the school teacher is also a parent and if the teacher, who's supposed to know the subject, doesn't, then what there to say about the other parents.

frumskeptic said...

there are more parents who aren't school teachers, or else this so-called "parnassa crisis" would be even worse.

Many parents still have decent enough jobs that the schools aren't completely underwater.

frumskeptic said...

usually good jobs come with some sort of education. Probably better than the seminary education that most of the teachers in the system come with.

i think that with homeschooling, there will be an even bigger shidduch crisis than there is today in the year 2028. actual school may be no fun, but i think that it is good at forcing kids to socialize with others.

frumskeptic said...

fcg- there are other means of socializing- as the article mentioned, music, dance, art and sports classes/teams.

And lets face it, the current shidduch crisis has nothing to do with anti social people, its exclusively due to the fact that people are anti-social with the opposite gender.

Ohr Naava which sees about 200 girls on the average wednesday night is in Brooklyn, Lakewood is in NJ.

I mean, dude...get them into the same town!

Lots of parents with special needs children who can't find a frum program fit for their child will homeschool. I did it one year. After that, I felt thaat she needed company, so I fought for legal rights to send where I needed to.

Everychild has special needs, because there is no such a thing as an average child. That's why parents can't just leave it to the schools to educate their children
