Kosher L'Pesach Oven

My rabbi said that in order to make the oven kosher l'pesach one needs to put it on self clean. I knew that, and I've heard several opinions on that. Like some say you need to self clean twice or something.

The thing that I do not understand is why on earth does one need to cover their oven with aluminum foil if it gets self-cleaned? Any chometz would NOT be eaten by a dog. Its ash. No other word to describe it but grey/black ash.

Why would you foil the oven? I do not understand that. I understand covering the stove, for it doesn't get self-cleaned. It isn't put into like 700 degree heat to burn, but the oven IS.

I don't get it. I really don't get it.
Why do frummies have to make their lives any more difficult than they already are?

Because they're bored. If they don't cover the whole apartment in 3 layers of foil, they won't feel that they cleaned properly.

Yea...This pesach cleaning stuff is completely overboard.

All the OCD tendencies start to come out around Pesach time.

I've never heard of covering the oven before. That's so... I don't know what the word is for it.

I thought of the word! Misguided.

Eh, I think it's more like this is the way it's always been done, before self-cleaning ovens, so they know they can rely on it and therefore just want to be sure.

Aluminum foil has been around for less than 100 years. It wasn't available during the wars and I very much doubt it was cheap enough to afford to buy enough of it to cover the whole house like people do now.

It's more a combo of paranoia, ocd and a general lack of knowledge of halocha.

Moshe- I'm saying in terms of ovens specifically, most people today grew up covering their ovens for Pesach. Because this is how they always did it, they know they can rely on it. I'm not talking about all the little bubbies, who probably don't have self-cleaning ovens and this whole discussion wouldn't apply to.
And while I agree that one shouldn't go totally overboard, in some ways it's better to be safe and "unleash your inner OCD" than do the bare minimum and be sorry when it comes to Pesach.

our rabbi recently gave a shiur on the whole oven thing said it should be self cleaned for 3 hours but you still have to cover the door with foil because it doesnt get cleaned.
we dont use foil anywhere though my mom claims people just use it to prove their more frum than people who dont

Because you're supposed to m'vatel your da'as to da'as Torah! But you couldn't possibly do that if everything they told you to do was reasonable and sane. Therefore, in order to multiply your merits, the rabbis thoughtfully created loony-tune chumras and mind-numbingly stupid "fences!" You should be grateful! And stop thinking!
