Mmm...Drain Food!!

At shuir my Rabbi was explaining how to clean the chometz from shabbos for pesach. He said that one option is to throw the leftover crumbs of bread down the drain (as complicated as that may be for some homes, it may be the best or only option for others). The funny part was that he went onto explain that the drain is chometz, but to ensure kosher usage of it on pesach, one should pour a bit of bleach or ammonia product down the drain (NOT together!!!). He said that we pour the chemical down in order to ensure that no one would eat what is in the drain.

With this my mom and I started cracking up. We went home, told my sister, and she started cracking up. I mean, really now, does anyone really have the desire to eat food from the drain? Do the water bugs add a zest you can't seem to find in your spice cabinet? I mean, really...it never even occured to me to clean the drains. I always learned that kosher l'pesach applied to foods that were edible, and things that could touch the foods... such as soap/dishwashing liquid, cleaners that are to be used ON pesach should not contain starches from kitniyot. I never thought that something so ridiculously disgusting as drain food would even be considered. Really...drain food?

Anyone wanna come over for heart healthy drain food?

well let me see.... would a dog eat drain food? isnt the requirement to get rid of all chametz even a dog may eat? like its still considered food if a dog might eat it. im not sure a dog would actually be able to reach the drain anyway. a cat could , though. cats go everywhere... hmmm... now would a cat eat drain food? hmmm ? i dont know the answer to that.

I always heard that it had to be clean enough that a dog wouldn't eat it. Dogs would definitely eat drain food...

My wife and I have our own humra to determine if something is chometz or not. If we see a crumb, we ask ourselves: "Would the Pianist(Roman Polanski Movie) eat it?" So if can't picture a scene with Adrien Brody licking up the specs of dirt unlikely to be food, then we are OK.
So...would the Pianist eat drain food? Not too sure, I think that's a question for your local orthodox holocaust survivor.

like fruum single female and Jessica said, it doesn't apply to what a human would eat but a rather a dog. Cause humans wouldn't eat crumbs off the floor or stuck in the fridge either. But yea I remember hearing that if you ruin the food that it's not edible then its okay. Although I heard it about another thing also, not just with Pesach.

Not that you would eat it, but you need to completely render it inedible.

How would you extract the food from the drain in the first place?

That's what I'd like to know too.
What if your dog is not a plumber or doesn't have a wrench or if you put the wrench away for pesach, is that good enough?
Why not just flush it down the toilet?

OK, Moshe, I see you are totally confused.

1. That food could be riched in the drain via steam when you pour something hot into your sink.

2. Dog or wrench have nothing to do with it because that aromatic steam may attach itself onto your food and make it hometz. For instance you just poured a pot of hot water into your drained and then proceded to wash tomatoes. The hometzdic steam from the drain attached itself to your tomato...

3. Since you do not have eat/cook in the bathrooms it is not relevant what you flush down there, because even if you decide to pour boiling water down that toilet the resulting steam is still too far away to attach itself to your food or dishes.

on the other hand I just gave an idea for a new chumra. You are not allowed to pour hot water down the toilet on Pesach.

I wonder how long will it be before bathing becomes asur on Pesach?

Disclaimor: I am not taking drainsteam as serious hametz.

People seem to wonder how a dog would manage to get to the food in the drain. Clearly none of you have ever had dogs. They have ways of getting to food when it seems impossible. Believe me. My family currently has four dogs (and before that we had two other ones). They will eat anything from anywhere. They drink out of the toilet for G-d's sake!

Frumpunk: I highly doubt drain food is edible at all. I dont think it is necessary to pour bleach or ammonia down the drain for it to be deemed inedible. The amount of dirt in the drains, plus the soap (you gotta call the poisen control center if swallowed) one uses is clearly not something even a dog would eat...especially if he wanted to remain alive.

mlevin: Kosher L'Pesach steam...Oy veyzmir. But then with frummies, you really never know. Nowadays they buy the lights used in hospitals to check for X-Rays to check for bugs in lettuce.
