THE INSANITY! THE HORROR!

The office "lunch room" has a vending machine. Every few weeks the vending machine is filled with a whole new stack of goodies for me to choose from. Thanks to the heavy Jewish population, and the strong demand for kosher productions, I am able to eat most of the things that are available in the machine. Well...yesterday I was sitting and enjoying my nice lunch, when I decided to look up at the machine and realized it had been restocked. I walked over to it, and lo and behold, there was a potato chip bag that said Burger King on it...AND...AN OUd!!!!!!!!!!!

YUP! Can you believe this?? The frummies attack the crap out of Talias Steakhouse for putting PARVE cheese on their burger, because there may be some sort of stupidity involved with maaras ayin, but a bag of BURGER KING onion rings has a hechsher!

Well... I hope the Yated doesn't find out about this, or else the OU will be excommunicated and they will add yet another question to the shidduch resume "Do you eat BK packaged, OUd onion rings?"

The Burger King onion rings are dairy... lol.
Mmm... I really want a Whopper and a milk shake right now...

hehe. yupz. they're dairy. :)

ironic. just that much worse off. Imagine if a Jew is spotted eating them with a milk shake? What will that appear like?

tsk tsk

lol. Go to KD and ummmm... forget the milkshake? or go to Carvel and THEN to KD. :) lol

So how did the new snack taste? You did buy it, Yes? :)

What about Boars Head mustard, also OU. It's just a name. I have to find this guy Morris Eyan and straighten him out

Nothing beats bacon bits in your salad when guests come over.

frumskeptic said...

childish- I bought it. Didn't get around to trying it yet.

Jay- LOL. :)

Moshe- mmm..bacon bits. What about pepperoni on your pizza :-)???

Ookamikun said...

I heard some places have parve pepperoni. For sure one place in Queens.

frumskeptic said...

I wont be shlepping to queens for pizza anytime soon. lol. Oh well.

Wow, that's crazy!
But this I can understand more than the kosher cheeseburger.

Here it's just a company making a food, the OU does it's job of checking foods to see if there are any non Kosher ingredients. They found non, so put a Hechsher on it. Doesn't matter the company name. There are other companies that have non kosher and kosher foods under it. It's just were not used to seeing a burger king bag with kosher stuff in it. But just like some cereals have kosher stuff, and non Kosher stuff, it is possible, it could make sense.

But with the imitations, that's lihachus, so that's a different story.

btw, I thought pepperoni was something to do with peppers?

frumskeptic said...

babysitter- chulent can be mistaken for a mild version of chili, and chicken with spices other than just salt can be mistaken for other fancy type of chicken. If you don't go the way of imitation, theres really nothing to eat thats actually "Jewish" except for maybe gefilte fish.

pepperoni is a meat. Looks like hard salami

Mikeinmidwood said...

If this is maaras Eyin then the burger king in Israel is too.

Jewish Side of Babysitter said...

FrumSkeptic: any imitation that is for the sake of substitute or stuff like that is fine. It's just the ones that are done purposefully to imitate the look of the non Kosher that I have a problem with.

JESSICA:

"The Burger King onion rings are dairy"

very possibly not. the OU unfortunately yanked its OU-DE designation last year and now OU-D is used both for products that are actually dairy and for those that are parve but prepared on dairy equipment. the only way to know for sure if something is could really be parve is to call the OU or the manufacturer and inquire (which i have done on occasion)

My favorite is cocktail souse. I call it shrimp souse because it was created specifically for shrimp and they sell with picture of shrimp on it. I personally put it on top of my gefilte fish. And of course there is a crap imitation that's sold everywhere.

We also like to buy "lobster tail" candy in Russian store. They are made in Russia and have a hechsher on them. But on their cover there is a large lobster and candy itself looks a bit like a lobster. One of my daughters loves them, and the other just can't get over the idea of a lobster...

Moshe,

I think you mean Pizza Professor. That place is awesome. Hope it's still there - I moved out of KGH (and out of NY entirely) over 3 years ago.

Back in 1983, when parve meat substitutes with a hechsher were almost unheard of, my parents had friends over for supper one evening when we were in Israel for the summer. My sister made a cheese cassarole with some new parve "meat" in it. We didn't tell them anything, just served the cassarole. They took a few bites, then looked very confused and horrified. They knew we were frum, but it certianly seemed like meat!

I became a vegetarian in 1991. It was much harder to get stuff with a hechsher then. Now, B"H, there are many, many products available if I feel like having something "meat" like.

LOZ - Ah... I still find it amusing though. Even if it is just dairy equipment.

Which is annoying. While I don't eat meat, my wife does and we keep Silk soymilk in the house. It used to be under Torah Scroll K with a DE, so she could drink it after eating meat. But then they changed it to OU-D. I dont think they changed their recipe, but since we don't know for sure, she can't drink it anymore when she's fleishik.

FS - lol, I actually did have KD last night... no milkshake though... but there is a Dunkin Donuts right down the street from me :-)

Jessica,

Did you move? Or is there a KD in your neck of the woods. Or am I misremembering the region in which you said you live?

David Staum said...

BTW, before anyone jumps at me and says "if you want something meat-like, just eat meat" - it's philisophical, not because I don't like the taste of meat.

Here's a great quote from this article:

"We're not insane. We know meat tastes good; it's why there's a freezer case at your supermarket full of woefully inadequate meat substitutes. Believe me, if obtaining bacon didn't require slaughtering a pig, I'd have a BLT in each hand right now with a bacon layer cake waiting in the fridge for dessert."

WHY WOULD YOU BECOME A VEGETARIAN?!

David Staum said...

I had a taiva to be a cannibal, so I adopted vegetarianism as a chumrah.

Ookamikun said...

I like blood and ripping meat apart with my hands so I decided to enjoy it instead.

When I was a teenager I trefed up my Mom's toaster oven by making a cheeseburger. She never knew it

"They took a few bites, then looked very confused and horrified."

i remember going with my grandfather into the first dunkin donuts with a hechsher and he wasn't at all happy. (the kosher dunkin donuts originally used to serve imiatation bacon, ham, sausage until the kanoim got involved)

"Silk soymilk in the house . . . But then they changed it to OU-D. I dont think they changed their recipe, but since we don't know for sure, she can't drink it anymore when she's fleishik."

my son has a very sensitive dairy allergy and used to drink silk. check again for yourself now, but when they first changed over i inquired to make sure and it was still DE even thought it said OU-D. same with ludens cough drops (which i live on during the winter)

Jay--
That's great! :D
I'm careful not to treif up my family's kitchen, but it secretly seems like a wickedly great idea.

I've never had the kosher pepperoni pizza, but real pepperoni pizza is pretty damn good. One time, when I was sitting in a treif pizza shop eating pepperoni pizza with chocolate milk, I realized that some people were speaking Yiddish! I was like, wtf? Yiddish in a treif pizza shop?! I looked over and there was a whole group of elderly people sitting around chatting in Yiddish. They had already finished their pie, so I couldn't tell if it was treife treif or just plain treif, but it was quite an amusing episode! Unforgettable.

Sara's in Miami has been doing veggie pepperoni forever. We used to buy it from them for our homemade pizza.

dys - nope, havent moved. there's a kd only a 10 minute bus ride away and there's a dunkin donuts a few streets away from my apartment. -- wait, when did I even tell you where I live?!

David Staum said...

Jessica,

You didn't, but I think you once implied it in some post or comment. For some reason I have the notion that you live in a certain city well outside of NYC and I didn't think there were any KD's outside the NYC area.

DYS - I was born and raised in the midwest, but have been living in NY for the past couple of years. Getting out of here around Jan/Feb though and going back to the good ol' midwest! YAY!!!
