The Best "Date"

Finally for the first time in weeks my best friend and I were able to hang out. We don't usually call the days we "hang out" "hanging out" rather we call them "dates" because it makes it more entertaining. The "dates" with best friends are the best dates of all.

My friend picked me up, we went to Dougies. We always order wings. Each time we go one of us takes the leftover wings home (afterall, wings are just the appetizer, theres only so much we could eat). But today, we both took wings, cuz our families (mostly my super hungry sister) expect them. And then we went for a walk around coney island/astro land, where we had way to much fun playing arcade games for tickets. My friend won 101 tickets at the deal/no deal game so we got my sister a cute little stuffed doggy, and dice for my friends car.

Then we decided to play the water gun game. We played like 3 times to trade up to a penguin. My best friend is OBSESSED with penguins. So, yay!! she got a penguin.

And then we went to 7-11, got slurpees and scratch lotto tickets. :-D

How cute and creative are we?

Now, if only real dating was this fascinating!

Frum Skeptic- 1. Why would you go to Dougie's? That stuff is rat food. CBS 2 did investigative piece on the one in Queens how it is really not clean and up to health code. It was nasty.

2. If you do go to Dougie's, why would you get wings? Poppers are so much better and easier to eat.

3. If you don't have fun dates, maybe you should have people who know you and the guy better. I will only let people who know me and the girl decently set me up. I don't let random people set me up. Also, girls can suggest dates too. Why is it on the guy to be extremely creative. Also, something can be fun but girls do these dates with every new guy. Like many Stern girls hate going to ESPN Zone even though its fun. It is because they get taken there on every first date.

Every person that set me up knew me pretty well. I just think they didn't know the guys that well, or have absolutely no insight.

And I LOOOOVE dougies. I go so seldomly that I think i can handle w/e it is they say is in it. As long as there are no rats literally IN my food, i'm fine.

You are a trooper. Would you eat wings on a date?

lol!!

First time i went to dougies I hated it. So I havent gone in a few years. Then I got set up with this one guy, and he took me to dougies, and odered wings as an appetizer. So i was sitting there being all girly trying to eat them with a fork and knife (that was a sight. lol), and he was just like "WHATS WRONG WITH YOU!"
lol :)
So i ate the wings.

And I orderd a burger too. And the ketchup got me all dirty on my face and hands. Funniest experience of my life.

So now I think i'd eat the wings and order a burger again, but be more careful. But i havent gone back there with a guy.

That is gutsy!! I'm glad it paid off there. If I was a girl and a guy took me to Dougie's I would dump him on the spot. You can't take a girl there until after you're married. It just shows no class.

What you mean you didn't answer back," What? I always eat wings with utensils."

Ophir: Theres nothing wrong with a guy asking a girl what to do on a date. Howver, guys tend to put the girl on the spot. LIke she walks into the car and he goes "so, what do you wnat to do?"

BAD BAD BAD! She just spent about 30 minutes being stupidly shallow and thinking only of hair and makeup. She can't think straight enough to come up with a decent answer even if she was DYING to try the new pizza place. She may just forget.

Also, the guys tend to pay. She may be uncomfortable choosing a date location, because he's paying. She doesnt want a cheap date, because he may assume she doesnt like him already, and seh doesnt want a super expensive date, because she doesnt want him to think she's high maintance/golddigger/snob or whatever.

If you give her notice, and tell her "coffee adn hang out?" she'll prob be glad to pick where to "hang out" or something. Just dont expect her to think on the spot in the car. Not everyone is good at that.

Also, Dougies wasn't a first date. But either way, I thought it was fun. Its all personality and attitude. He made it enjoyable. I was annoyed at him because he ordered to many appetizers, and I don't like throwing food out, so when I couldn't finish my burger, he like started cheering for me to do so. lol.

It was fun. Definitly different, and out of my comfort zone, but fun. ANd i went out with him for a while. (I dont complain about him).

childish: LOL. That woulda been a great thing to say. haha.

btw- I took a girl out to a fun place and then asked her if she wanted to go for slurpees and she said yes. We got a couple bingo cards and talked. When I told an older friend who iss a girl she was shocked i did such a thing on a first date. I don't know, I am getting mixed signals here.

frumskeptic said...

Do what you think is right. If she doesnt like you, she isn't right for you.

Don't worry abotu protocal. Don't scare her by buying her a diamond on the first date, but doing something "original" shouldn't be a problem unless the girl is dull.

But who wants dull? imagine spending 100 years with someone who is dull?

You'll find someone cool who likes Dougies. It's not a hard sell among the gents.

Have you ever thought about dating some more MO guys? Like, someone from the Upper West Side? You might get along. Spend a Shabbat there...

... or at Columbia, if you're still close to 20. Their Hillel is pretty cool. You could stay at Barnard, their sister school for girls.

Dates should be like that. They should be fun.

Of course there's the tension of the first date and it's difficult to relax totally, but after a few dates, the person you're going out with should feel like a friend. If not and you can't laugh and be silly, then the relationship isn't going anywhere.

David Staum said...

People think too much about "rules" when they're dating. Like this one: you should never go to a movie for your first date.

Well on our first date, my future wife & I decided that we both really wanted to see Lord of the Rings. So we went. Then we ate at Bagel Boss (Pretty much the only kosher place near the theater in Long island).

We had a great time and we felt like 2 old friends.

Not great but not too bad either.

I’m considering putting yidsense on my http://www.simchawear.com site, can I ask you how it’s working for you so far?

FS is not an upper west side type and it wouldnt be shayach :)

Ophir - tell me a little about yourself. I know a girl who is self proclaimed modern (opinionated) and likes wings (not high maintenance), interested?
:)

frumskeptic said...

tznius lady: I just put yidsense up yesterday. Ask me again soon, and I'll be happy to answer. :)

RV: Don't talk for me. :-p

Skeptic said...

Realistic- When you say "you know a girl," we all know you are referring to yourself lol. I'm only 21 and I don't get involved with girls even a grade older than me. It never works out well for the guy with older girls. If you really do have a friend you are more than welcome to email me but i doubt I will take you up on it because I don't let random people set me up.

Frum Skeptic- You don't have to be embarrassed if you are interested lol. I don't bite lol.

fs this was i must say a very incredible date that u and ur bff decided to have....i must confirm as a 20 year old girl if a guy took me out to dougies on a date i would totally love it, just for the mere fact that it is so unexpected and i happen to love dougies as well...as for coney island that sounds like tons of fun, and even if i was asked what i wanted to do on a date i would have no problem paying for myself to play the games....this actually sounds like an idea i would have to put into action for my next date...

my best friend and i go out on dates whenever we can and all i can say is nothing can compare to the time i picked her up and we decided to go to a cafe where she ordered a pasta with sauce and proceeded to eat, needless to say she ended up splattering the sauce on herself, the table, the mirror, and of course me, i dont think i have ever laughed so hard in public in my life...now that would have been a fun date with a guy (not that it wasnt fun with her)

Ophir,

First rule of being an adult: stop referring to age differences as grade levels. You're not in high school.

Skeptic said...

DYS- I stop referring to age as grade when I am done with college. The reason I do this is because grade tells you what stage people are in life. If two people are in different grades but the same age (for whatever reason) they will be at different stages in life until they both graduate college and enter the work force. Until then it makes a difference what GRADE people are in.

Anonymous said...

Ophir: What about people who went to work right out of high school, people who went to yeshiva then college, people who went to yeshiva then worked then college...

Once high school ends you can only be on the "same level" as someone if both of you did the exact same thing from graduation to now. I'm 23 and still in college but I've got 5 years of work and yeshiva behind me that someone who went straight from high school to college doesnt have. And aging by "grade level" out of high school is just stupid.

Skeptic said...

Frumpunk- I was just explaining my reason for the terminology I used. It really isn't a big deal. Also, most of my friends go through the same process so I don't run into that problem so much. Even if you took a few years to work and learn before college that means you still have minimum 2 years of college. I don't know about you, but most people can't support a family while in college, so yes, "grade level" does matter. If this is the worst thing you can call me out on go right ahead. As the saying goes "You are making a mountain out of a molehill."

Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun.

Ophir made an Interesting point about grades and I agree with it. I have a cousin who is the same age as me, but because I'm a grade older everything is different. You are doing different stuff. When I was graduating HS she was still in it. When I was in sem, she was in 12th grade. She was always a year behind. Although she is driving before me. Then there can be mothers whose children are in the same class, even if their 20 years apart and for one its their first child and for another its their 10th its still the same thing, they can relate to each other cause they both have a child at the same age level. So its based on the stages you are in that you can relate to people, rather than the ages.
